A Cultural Oasis in Menteng: The Honai-Inspired Playground

In the heart of Jakarta’s historic Menteng district, a striking new landmark bridges Indonesia’s rich architectural heritage with modern play. Located at a school housed in a protected Dutch Colonial heritage building, this innovative playground was designed to provide a vibrant Indonesian contrast to its stately European surroundings.

The design draws its primary inspiration from the Honai, the traditional mushroom-shaped dwellings of the Papua highlands. By translating these ancient forms into a play space, the project creates a visual dialogue between different eras and regions of Indonesian history.

The playground’s centerpiece features a series of interconnected towers defined by iconic thatched roofing and organic, rounded shapes. While the aesthetic remains traditional, the materials are built for the future; the towers utilize shading made from synthetic woven materials that mimic traditional textures while offering superior durability and weather resistance.

More than just a visual feat, the structure is a hub of activity. Each tower is packed with diverse play components, inviting students to slide, climb, and crawl through a cultural landscape. It is a perfect example of how architecture can honor the past while providing a dynamic space for the next generation to grow.
